GTA 6 editions and pre-order guide
There are exactly two editions of Grand Theft Auto VI, they are $20 apart, and the more expensive one can be added later for that same $20 — which makes this a much smaller decision than it looks. The parts that are genuinely time-sensitive are the two pre-order bonuses, both of which stop being available at the end of launch day.
Everything below is checked against Rockstar’s own pages and against live retailer listings. Where we could not verify something, the page says so rather than guessing.
The short answer
- Buy the Standard Edition, digitally, from the PlayStation or Microsoft store, before launch day. That combination is the only one that gets you both pre-order bonuses, and it keeps the $20 upgrade available if you want it later.
- There is no disc. Every boxed copy is a download code in a box. If you were buying physical for resale, lending, or offline install, that is not what you would be getting.
- Do not pay $99.99 to be safe. The Ultimate content is sold separately, permanently, at the same $20 difference.

|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | $79.99 | PS5, Xbox Series X|S | Digital, or a download code in a box |

Standard Edition
- The full game.
- Vintage Vice City Pack — pre-order bonus, included with both editions, only if you buy before November 19, 2026 at 23:59:59. Contains the two-tone '55 Vapid Stanier sedan and the Shore Court garage near Ocean Beach, a vintage pastel linen suit and period hairstyle for Jason, a red sequin mini dress and curls for Lucia, and a tropical weapon pattern styled after Tommy Vercetti's palm-tree design.
- One free month of GTA+ — pre-order bonus, but only on purchases made through the PlayStation Store or the Microsoft Store. A download code bought from the Rockstar Store or a retail shelf does not qualify.
Our take: The right call for almost everyone. You get the entire game, and the pre-order pack is identical to the one Ultimate buyers get. If you later decide you want the Ultimate content, you can add it for $20 at any point — so the decision is genuinely reversible, which is unusual for a special edition and is the main reason not to overthink it.
Ultimate Edition
- Everything in the Standard Edition, including the same two pre-order bonuses, plus the 16 items below.
- Vehicles: the '95 Grotti Cheetah; the '67 Vapid Dominator Buggy, which comes with the Paradise Garage in Watson Bay (weapon locker plus a place to fence stolen goods); Jason's safehouse vehicles, a Dinka Enduro motorcycle and a Crest Kayak; and the Shitzu Squalo, a pink-and-blue boat docked at Washington Beach.
- Weapons: the Hawk & Little Morgan Revolvers, a his-and-hers pair with palm-tree-etched grips; and personalized engraved variants of Jason's Girardi ES9 and Lucia's Klose K17 pistols.
- Vehicle mods: the Ganado Retro Build kit for Jason's Vapid Ganado pickup.
- Shops and mod facilities that only open with this edition: Rideout Customs Mod Shop, One-Eyed Willie's Mod Shop in Lake Leonida, Sara's Unisex Salon, the Stock 305 Clothing Store, and the Electric Fang Tattoo Parlor with over 50 tattoos designed by the artist collective FAILE.
- Clothing: the Vice City Style pack of outfits and tattoos, and Goodtime Gear, a capsule collection built around the TV character Macca the Gator.
- Two side missions: the PTT Youngin$ Illegal Goods Store raid, and the Classic Car Collection, a commission from a collector named Wyman.
Our take: Hard to recommend up front. Rockstar says Ultimate content is "threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia's story, with new items uncovered behind each chapter" — meaning it unlocks gradually rather than landing in your garage at launch, and Rockstar has published no schedule for it. Since the same content is sold separately as a $20 upgrade at any time, the low-risk play is to buy Standard, play a few chapters, and upgrade if you find yourself wanting it. You lose nothing by waiting.
Ultimate Edition Upgrade — $20.00
Confirmed by Rockstar Support: Standard Edition owners can buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade separately "at any point," with no deadline. Code-in-box buyers can upgrade too, once the code has been redeemed. The $20.00 figure is the price listed on the Microsoft Store; the PlayStation Store listing currently shows no price, so we have not independently confirmed it there.
Where to pre-order
The game is identical wherever you buy it. What differs is format, the free GTA+ month, and in exactly one case a genuine retailer incentive. Prices below were checked on the retailers’ own listings on September 9, 2026.
| Retailer | Editions | Price | Format | Exclusive | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Store | Standard and Ultimate | $79.99 / $99.99 | Digital | Free GTA+ month (redeem by March 31, 2027) | Pre-order open |
| Xbox / Microsoft Store | Standard, Ultimate, and the $20 Ultimate Upgrade | $79.99 / $99.99 / $20.00 | Digital | Free GTA+ month (redeem within 180 days of purchase) | Pre-order open |
| Best Buy | Standard only | $79.99 | Download code in a box | 10x My Best Buy points for Plus and Total members, through November 18, 2026 | Pre-order open, release-day store pickup offered |
| Target | Standard only | $79.99 | Download code in a box | None | In stock |
| Walmart | Standard only | $79.99 | Download code in a box | None | Pre-order open, arrives by November 12 |
| GameStop | Standard only | $79.99 | Download code in a box | None specific to this game | Listed as currently unavailable online as of September 9 — in-store varies |
| Rockstar Store | Standard and Ultimate | $79.99 code in box | Digital, or a download code in a box shipping from November 12 | None — buying direct carries no extra bonus | Pre-order open, while supplies last |
Two notes on that table. Best Buy is the only US retailer offering anything genuinely exclusive — 10x My Best Buy points for Plus and Total members, which expires November 18, 2026. And Amazon is deliberately absent: we could not load its listing to verify a price, and we would rather leave a row out than publish a number we have not seen ourselves.
Historically, retailer bundles and incentives for a launch this size cluster into the final six weeks. The field is unusually bare right now, so expect this table to change.
Should you pre-order at all?
Our general position on pre-orders is that they mostly benefit the retailer. This release is a partial exception, and it is worth being precise about why. The Vintage Vice City Pack and the free GTA+ month are both hard-gated to purchases made before the end of November 19, and Rockstar has said nothing about ever offering them again. If you already intend to buy the game, pre-ordering digitally costs you nothing and gets you both.
What has changed from previous console generations is the physical case. There is no disc, so a boxed copy buys you no resale value, no lending, and no offline install — and because codes only start shipping on November 12, a boxed copy will most likely arrive after the preload window has already opened. If you were planning to buy physical for any of the traditional reasons, those reasons no longer apply here.
The one thing we would not do is spend $99.99 defensively. The Ultimate content is permanently available as a $20 add-on, it unlocks gradually through the story rather than at launch, and no part of it is story content you would otherwise miss.
Frequently asked questions
Does GTA 6 come on a disc?
No. There is no disc. Rockstar Support states plainly that the physical version "will contain a download code that can be used for the digital download of the game. A disc will not be included in the box." Every US retailer selling a boxed copy — Best Buy, Target, Walmart, GameStop — is selling a code in a box, and each of their listings says so. You need an internet connection and a platform account either way, and a boxed copy will not work offline or resell like a disc.
What is the difference between the Standard and Ultimate editions?
Both contain the same game and the same two pre-order bonuses. Ultimate adds 16 extra items for $20: four vehicle entries, two weapon sets, a vehicle mod kit, five shops and mod facilities, two clothing packs and two side missions. None of it is additional story. The same bundle is sold separately as the Ultimate Edition Upgrade at any time, so buying Standard now does not lock you out.
Do I get the Vintage Vice City Pack with the Ultimate Edition?
Only if you buy before the deadline. This is widely reported incorrectly. Rockstar classifies the Vintage Vice City Pack as a pre-order bonus on both editions, not as Ultimate Edition content — the PlayStation and Microsoft listings both gate it on purchasing prior to November 19, 2026 at 23:59:59. Buy Ultimate after that date and, per the published terms, you do not get the pack. Rockstar has said nothing about whether it will be sold separately later.
Who actually gets the free month of GTA+?
Only people who pre-order through the PlayStation Store or the Microsoft Store. Rockstar files it under a separate heading, "Digital Store Pre-Order Bonus," and its FAQ names those two storefronts specifically. Buying a code in a box — including from the Rockstar Store — appears not to qualify. Redemption deadlines differ: PS5 buyers must redeem by March 31, 2027; Xbox buyers within 180 days of purchase, one redemption per account.
When can I preload GTA 6?
November 12, 2026, at local midnight — a full seven days before launch, and the same date on both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Worth doing early: this is a very large download and the day-one traffic will be extreme. One catch for boxed copies — the codes only begin shipping on November 12, with one to seven days of delivery after that, so a boxed copy will very likely reach you after preload has already opened.
Is GTA 6 coming to PC?
Rockstar has not announced a PC version, has not dated one, and has not commented on it either way. The official site lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and mentions no other platform. Rockstar has historically brought GTA titles to PC well after console release, but that is a pattern, not a commitment, and every specific PC date circulating right now is unsourced. We will update this line the day Rockstar says something.
Is it worth pre-ordering at all?
There is a real reason this time, and it is a narrow one: the Vintage Vice City Pack and the GTA+ month genuinely disappear at the end of launch day. If you already know you are buying the game, pre-ordering digitally costs nothing extra and gets you both plus the preload. If you are unsure whether you want the game, the pack is not worth committing $80 to sight-unseen — wait for reviews.
Can I cancel a GTA 6 pre-order?
Usually yes, but the terms differ by retailer and none of them publish game-specific language for this title. Digital storefronts generally allow cancellation up to release; physical retailers generally allow it until the item ships. GameStop notes only that "billing does not occur until order is processed." Check the cancellation terms on the listing you are actually buying from — that is the version that binds.
Prices, stock and retailer offers change. Everything above was verified on September 9, 2026 against Rockstar’s own pages and the retailers’ live listings; the listing at the time you buy is what applies.
