The ESRB now lists GTA 6, with no description yet

Grand Theft Auto VI now has an entry in the ESRB’s own ratings database. On 2 October it had none.

The entry lists Rockstar Games as the publisher, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series as the platforms, a Mature 17+ rating, and the same seven content descriptors both console storefronts have carried since 2 October: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. Its one interactive element is In-Game Purchases.

That matters because of what was true three weeks ago and is not true now. The rating was being published by the two console storefronts and not by the body whose name was on it. The body publishes it too.

Nobody has said when. The ESRB prints no rating date on the entry, so the most we can tell you is a window. We searched its database on 2 October, read all five pages of results for Grand Theft Auto, and this game was not among them. It is there now.

The part worth having is still missing. The entry has a heading reading Rating Summary, and under it a single sentence that repeats the rating and the descriptors. Grand Theft Auto V’s entry, a few rows down the same search, carries a long paragraph instead, describing the torture sequence, the drug use, the prostitution, and the specific words used in dialogue. That paragraph is the document a parent actually reads, and for this game it does not exist yet. Our parents’ guide explains why that gap may be structural rather than a delay: the ESRB runs two rating processes, and only one of them produces a descriptive summary.

One detail cuts against the easy assumption. These seven descriptors are the same seven Grand Theft Auto V carries, which leaves open the possibility that a record was copied rather than assigned. One field argues otherwise. GTA V’s entry declares Users Interact alongside In-Game Purchases. This game’s declares In-Game Purchases alone, which is what a separate assignment for a single-player game would look like.

Still unknown: the rating date, which of the ESRB’s two rating processes produced this, and whether a descriptive Rating Summary is coming at all. PEGI had no entry for the game when we last searched it on 9 October, and we have not been able to check Germany’s USK.
